Broadcaster According to Vermillion Police Chief Matt Betzen, the community of Vermillion is being hit hard by a rash of burglaries. In the months of May and June there have already been 28 confirmed car break-ins committed: 13 of them early on the morning of Sunday, June 6 and an additional five on Wednesday, June 1, alone. “We had a substantial number of burglaries reported on those two nights in the last week,” Betzen said. “We are not sure at this point if it is one individual, one group of individuals or several different people. All we do know is that they are going car to car, door to door and breaking into cars. There have also been several instances where we believe they have accessed unlocked garages, as well.” While the police department has no suspects at this time they are working to establish a potential pattern in the hopes of being able to increase patrols. Betzen noted that Elk Point has had similar burglaries recently, as well, so they are working with the Elk Point Police Department to see if there is a similar pattern. “The issue is they have not been impacting just one area of town so we are not sure where to set the extra patrols,” Betzen said. “There have been quite a few instances in the southeast part of town, but that doesn’t mean anything, because there is no guarantee that they will return to the areas they have already targeted.” Betzen said that the number of burglaries traditionally increases this time of year. “Every summer we see these types of crimes increase,” he said. “In most cases we identify and charge the individuals. Many times they are juveniles and because they are treated differently in the court system I am not sure what deterrent that has been. Also, say we do identify and charge someone with committing five of the burglaries, that raises the question did they commit all 30? It is hard to tell.” Betzen said he hopes the community will harden the targets of opportunity for the individuals committing the burglaries. “People need to roll up their windows, lock their car and garage doors and remove all valuables from the car,” he said. “Even if your windows are rolled up and the doors are locked, if the individuals can look in the window and see cash or say a GPS system, they will break the windows to get access to the car. If you have alarm systems, use them. Use common sense and park under the street lights, if possible. Darkness is a burglar’s friend; they are less likely to break into your vehicle if it is in a lighted area.” The other piece of advice Betzen has for the community is if something doesn’t look right, or you hear or see something, call the police right away. “We have heard from several people in the community that they did hear or see something and they just didn’t call, which, honestly, isn’t that unusual,” he said. “But if you call us, we have people out on patrol and unless there is something major happening in the community we will respond right away.” He stressed that when a group of individuals has success in a community they will likely come back. “We live in a very trusting community and people do take advantage of that,” Betzen said. “Also, keep in mind it doesn’t mean anything for someone to travel 50 miles up the interstate from Sioux City to do something like this. It is very easy for them to leave and return. So, it is your own best interest to make your car a hard target.” 201 W.
