Broadcaster Press 11 June 21, 2016 www.broadcasteronline.com School Board Accepts Resignations, Approves New Hires Monday By David Lias david.lias@plaintalk.net The Vermillion School Board approved several staff resignations, and also approved the hiring of new employees at its regular meeting Monday night in the Al Neuharth Media Center. The board approved the resignation of Shannon Fitzsimmons as assistant track and field coach. She will remain as head coach of the Tanagers girls soccer and gymnastics teams. Joey Olson’s resignation from the Vermillion School District as middle school football coach and high school basketball coach were also approved by the school board. He noted in his resignation letter that he is pursuing full-time teaching and coaching positions. Also resigning from the Vermillion School District is Thomas Hatzenbuhler, an educational assistant for the Vermillion Area Alternative School. In his letter of resignation, he noted that he has decided to pursue other professional opportunities. Cassie Kleihauer, a special education instructor at Austin Elementary, has also informed the board of her resignation. In her resignation letter, she states that she desires to work closer to home, and will continue to pursue her teaching career in Iowa. The school board approved the resignations of Lexie Madsen, an educational assistant at Jolley Elementary School, and Joel Gonzalez, a part-time custodian at Vermillion Middle School. It also approved the requests of Gretchen Scoblic and Brandy Wallin to resign as sophomore class advisors. The board approved the hiring of Briana Kautz of Yankton as seventh grade geography teacher. She attended College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., and majored in social studies with a minor in secondary education/history. She has one year’s experience teaching social studies at Tripp-Delmont High School, and will receive a salary of $32,750. David Lind of Clarinda, Iowa, will begin this fall as a new fourth grade teacher for the Vermillion School District after his contract received school board approval Monday night. He is a graduate of the University of South Dakota, with an undergraduate degree in elementary education and a minor in reading. He has taught second grade in Clarinda for five years, and served a fifth grade teacher in Harrisburg for one year. The school board also approved the contract of Casey Mart of Vermillion, who will join the Vermillion School District as third grade teacher when the 2016-17 school year begins. Mart has an undergraduate degree in elementary education, with a minor in middle school education. She has taught preschool and third grade in the Irene-Wakonda School District, and served as a Title I aide in the Vermillion School District. Also hired as a third grade teacher Monday night is Chelsea Mattson of Brandon. She has a degree in elementary education from the University of South Dakota, and taught kindergarten for two years at Brandon Valley Elementary School. The contract of Betsy Mortinsen of Vermillion as the district’s JK through first grade special education teacher was approved by the school board Monday. Market Yourself Mortinsen has a bachelor of arts degree in communications disorders from USD, and also a master’s degree in special education from the university. She has worked as a graduate teaching assistant in the School of Education at USD, and as a student teacher and substitute at Dakota Valley. She will receive $33,300 annually. Other new hires approved Monday in the areas of certified and classified employees are Tyler Meints of Vermillion, who will serve as head debate coach and receive $4,725; Michael Nelson, Vermillion, who will serve as assistant track coach and sophomore class advisor, for an annual stipend of $3,150, and $157.50 respectively; Jamie Smith, who will serve as sophomore class adviser for $157.50 annually; and Dawn Anderson, who will work as assistant alternative school instructor this summer. The school board also approved the hiring of Jayme Mulheron of Vermillion as middle school summer custodian until July.
