South Dakota Air National
Guard Celebrates 70 Years
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - It’s not unusual to see
and hear the F-16s of the South Dakota Air National Guard flying over the city of Sioux Falls. In
the coming months, members of the community
should keep a watchful eye out for a new and
unique tail on one of these aircraft.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of
the unit and to celebrate this event the unit
has painted aircraft #428 with a distinctive tail
flash, ventral fins and horizontal stabilizers.
The usual subdued gray color scheme will be
replaced temporarily with bold black, red and
white colors.
Meant to represent aircraft of the unit
throughout its history, the red lightning bolt in
the design is representative of the first aircraft
flown by the unit in 1946, the P-51 Mustang. The
P-51 was an American long-range, single-seat
fighter and fighter-bomber used during World
War II, the Korean War and other conflicts.
The original design of the P-51 included a
bold red lightning bolt across the nose of the
aircraft. The lightning bolt is also a part of the
ventral fin design on the 70th anniversary commemorative aircraft.
The ever present “Lobo” with a unique color
scheme graces the left view of the tail of the aircraft with “70 years” prominently displayed on
the right.
The process of changing the tail art on this
commemorative aircraft was left up to the
skilled craftsmen of the 114th Fighter Wing fabrication shop. From concept and design, to the
final painting of the tail, several people were involved to make this project happen.
The unit reached out to long-time supporter
and Sioux Falls aircraft enthusiast, John Mollison, to design the tail based on ideas from the
unit. The Airman responsible for the final product was Master Sgt. Roger Vearrier, 114th Maintenance Squadron structural repair technician,
a 25 year veteran of the unit.
“This was a fun and unique project to complete,” said Vearrier. “I’ve been here since the
beginning of the F-16 at Joe Foss Field, and this
is the first time I can remember us painting a tail
with a unique design.”
Easily seen on the ground and in the sky, the
tail design will grace the skies over Sioux Falls
and the surrounding area for the rest of 2016 and
will be prominently displayed at Sioux Falls Airshow 2016 - Power on the Prairie, which will be
held at Joe Foss Field, July 23-24.
“We are very excited about celebrating 70
years of the South Dakota Air National Guard,”
said Col. Nathan Alholinna, 114th Fighter Wing
commander. “The pride and professionalism
of the Lobo Airmen is reflected in the striking
uniqueness of tail 428.”
Dave Says
No more guilt trips!
Dear Dave,
My parents left their six-figure jobs to enter
the ministry when I was in high school. That
was 10 years ago, and my mom still regularly
asks me to share my money with them. I don’t
mind helping out once in a while, but this has
been going on for a long time and I’ve started
feeling bitterness about the requests and their
bad financial decisions. My mom also tries to
make me feel bad sometimes if I can’t afford to
give them as much as they want. She constantly
references their calling, and that I should want
to help with that. How can I stop this pattern?
Renee
Dear Renee,
This is not a healthy situation for anyone
involved. By consistently giving or loaning your
parents money, you’ve lost respect for them
in the process. The relationship has become
strained, and that’s a tough thing for anyone to
deal with — especially in a parent-child situation. On top of all that, your mom sounds like
a travel agent for guilt trips. It seems like she’s
working you over while implying it’s all really
for God. That’s toxic.
Going into the ministry is an admirable
thing. However, I remember a guy in the Bible
named Paul who made tents while he conducted his ministry. I’m paraphrasing, of course,
but his line was something like, “If you don’t
work, you don’t eat.” He had a job, remember?
So, suggesting that someone work outside the
ministry while trying to do God’s work isn’t
mean or unfair.
No one should do this to their child, and it’s
going to be hard to unravel it all and turn it into
a respectable situation. I hope everyone will
consider sitting down with a mature third party,
and developing a situation where you’re no
longer giving or lending them money.
In the meantime, read a book called Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud. After that and some
objective intervention, I think this situation will
become a lot healthier for everyone.

Finding the right
motivation
Dear Dave,
My husband and I make $180,000 a year
combined, and we have a net worth of about
$1.6 million. We’ve been blessed financially,
and lots of times motivated by a survival point
of view, but what do you do
when you’re not motivated by
that kind of thing anymore?
How do you find and live out
God’s purpose for your life?
Lisa
Dear Lisa,
Congratulations on your
success! You guys really have
been blessed, and it sounds
like you’ve worked hard for
Dave
your wealth.
If you’ve ever studied
psychology a little bit, you
may remember Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
Basically, once you get physiological and
safety needs met, you feel a need to find other
things to motivate you. It sounds like you’re a
performance-oriented person. So am I. People
like us get our relaxation and even fulfillment
away from work in different ways than most
people.
My suggestion would be to start thinking
about ways you can serve and help other people or causes you care about. This could even
mean becoming a stay-at-home mom for a while
and really pouring into your kids, if you have
them. If it’s something else, that’s okay too.
How about this? You’ve obviously been thinking
about this stuff for a while. Take a day all to
yourself, away from everything and everybody,
and bring along nothing but some food and
drink, a bunch of notepads and pencils, and a
Bible. Open up your mind and your heart to the
things you care about and all the possibilities.
You have to have a goal that is worthy in your
mind, and you don’t have that right now.
I can’t tell you what your calling is, Lisa, but
I can say this. There’s tons of joy and fulfillment
to be found when you’re working in a way to
serve the people and things that matter most
in your life!

Celebrating An Unparalleled Way Of Life
Master Sgt. Roger Vearrier, 114th Maintenance Squadron fabrication technician, makes a final
inspection of the 70th anniversary tail art that was painted on an F-16 assigned to the 114th Fighter
Wing at Joe Foss Field in Sioux Falls, S.D, June 22, 2016. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the
South Dakota Air National Guard and the unit will be flying this commemorative aircraft over the
next few months to recognize this milestone. This aircraft, along with many more military and civilian aircrafts, will be on static display at the Sioux Falls Airshow at Joe Foss Field, July 23-24, 2016.

By Gov. Dennis Daugaard:
In the spring of 2012, I
had the chance to visit somewhere I’d never expected to
go. I joined Michigan Gov.
Rick Snyder and Rhode Island
Gov. Lincoln Chafee for a Department of Defense trip to
Kuwait and Afghanistan. I am
not well-traveled, so I had no
idea what to expect.
Our first stop was Kuwait.
Although it was springtime,
we saw very little vegetation.
Only along some parts of the
road did we spot any growing plants – plants that had
been planted and watered. We
drove through blowing sand
and dust, and traversed areas
where overland oil pipelines
and overhead electric transmission towers dominated
the countryside. The dust
was so bad at one point that
we could not see the sun. The
SD National Guard soldiers I
met in Kuwait were just weeks
from their scheduled return
to South Dakota, and their
mood was upbeat.
When we arrived in Afghanistan we were directed to
wear helmets and flak jackets.
America was actively at war
here. We traveled in armored
helicopters and when we flew,
it was largely at night. Our
helicopter was equipped with
machine guns mounted on
both sides. Armed soldiers accompanied us throughout our
stay. In one daytime flight I
noticed the walls surrounding
most homes and some fields.
The walls weren’t built to
contain or exclude livestock,
but to provide security. One
group of SD National Guard I
met had the duty of providing
security for transports. The
mood of these guardsmen
was more serious and tense.
Enroute home, we flew to
Landstuhl, Germany, where
the most severely injured
troops were being sent. I remember a conversation with
a soldier who had been shot

in the lower extremities and

been shot. He judged that the
person who shot them was
about 10 years old.
When I arrived back in
South Dakota, the prairies
were lush and green. No escorts were needed, nor any
body armor. I saw well-kept
houses surrounded by green
lawns. Kids were playing outside.
In America, our abundance and freedom is so commonplace that we often take
things for granted – clean air,
running water, kids playing,
feelings of safety. Yet there
are many places in the world
where these things are uncommon or even rare.
On July 2, a group of South
Dakotans who understand
this more deeply than the
rest of us will return home. After 10 months in Kuwait, the
155th Engineer Company will
return to South Dakota. I expect the soldiers of the 155th
will spend this holiday weekend fully appreciating the
freedoms we have in America,
and we should do likewise.
This Independence Day let
us celebrate the beliefs upon
which America was founded –
that every person is born with
unalienable rights: life, liberty
and the pursuit of happiness.
Our freedoms have led to a
prosperity that no one in 1776
could have imagined.
But beliefs alone did not
secure America’s way of life.
Rather, it was those beliefs
made tangible through the
sacrifices of those who have
worn our country’s uniform.
It is thanks to the men and
women of the 155th Engineer
Company and all of those who
have served that you and I are
free.
Happy Independence Day,
America.
