Australian rider competes in Irene Rodeo Dakota Senior Meals
BY JEREMY HOECK
jeremy.hoeck@yankton.net
IRENE — The Irene Rodeo
had global representation
this year.
Jonty Raaen, an 18-yearold from New South Wales,
Australia, was one of the
hundreds of riders to compete in the 24th annual event
this past weekend.
There was an understandable curiosity factor
involved when that fact was
mentioned by the announcer
Saturday night. Fans watching the action certainly took
notice.
Raaen is in South Dakota
for a couple months this
summer and is staying with
the Webb family, who own
Webb Ranches near Volin.
Raaen is one of two Australians — and four youth in
total — staying with Bogie
Webb and his wife, Penny,
as part of an internship
program at the ranch.
“I’m just trying to stay
active,” Raaen said after his
Saddle Bronc ride Saturday
night.
The four members of
the internship spend the
summer months working in
the breeding and training
programs, and at the end of
the summer, compete in the
Colt Start Challenge — the
winner is awarded a trophy
saddle with skill level prizes.
Raaen, in particular,
met Bogie Webb down in
Australia when he was there
putting on a clinic. Raaen attended the clinic last fall and
then became interested in
the internship program.
“Jonty’s a nice kid; a good
worker,” Bogie said. “We’re
just trying to help him with
different things. Anything
we can do to help him, we
want to.”
Being around horses is
nothing new for Raaen. He
said he’s been competing in
rodeos nearly all his life, and
only recently started Saddle
Bronc riding — both of his
parents had done it, he said.
With Bogie set to compete in the Irene Rodeo,
Raaen said he wanted to give
it a try.
What he experienced,
though, was far beyond anything he expected, based on
his experiences back home.
“It’s not as big as here,”
Raaen said. “They have the
same events, but it’s not as
big.”
As an example, he referenced the rodeo clown and
the various promotions as
things he wouldn’t have seen
back home.
“We don’t have any acts
like you guys do up here,”
Raaen said. “It’s more of a
performance up here, as opposed to just a competition.
“It’s based more for the
fans up here, but down there
it’s mainly just all about the
riders.”
And when came time
for him to actually ride,
Raaen came away a little
disappointed with his Saddle
Bronc performance.
“Rubbish,” he said. “It
didn’t go very well.
“I’m not too happy about
it, but it was still fun.”
That was also a word Bill
Marcotte used to describe
this year’s Irene Rodeo.
A member of the Irene
Rodeo Association since the
inaugural event, Marcotte
— the treasurer — said the
rodeo has progressed each
year, and to the point where
some of the top riders in
the Midwest make a point to
stop in Irene.
“It gets bigger every
year,” Marcotte said during
Saturday night’s event. “We
have top quality stock and
performers who come here.”
And over time, the rodeo
grounds have undergone
plenty of modifications, according to Marcotte.
• When the event first
started, area towns provided
bleachers. Now, the rodeo
grounds have their own.
• When the event first
started, panels were installed to create a perimeter.
Now, there’s a permanent
arena with fences all the way
around.
• When the event first
started, pens had to be built.
Now, they’re there perma-
nently.
• When the event first
started, the concession
stand was inside a tent. Now,
there are actual concession
stands.
“We just try to keep it
up,” Marcotte said, “keep it
looking nice all year.”
A popular attraction
at this year’s rodeo was
the performance by ‘The
Rawhide ‘n Dusty Show,’
a Missouri-based show in
which longhorn steer climb
to the top of the trailer and
the rider (on horseback)
also climbs to the top.
“People have really loved
that,” Marcotte said. “After
he does that, he’s over there
signing autographs for the
kids. That’s been a big hit.”
The Irene Rodeo has
survived in large part to the
sponsorship support over
the years, according to Marcotte. Businesses can sponsor each of the 12 events,
and some even sponsor the
chutes.
“We wouldn’t be here
without them,” Marcotte
said.
And then there’s all the
volunteers who help, he
added.
“We literally couldn’t do
this without all the volunteer
help we get,” Marcotte said.
“They come from all over to
help us out.”
