PRESS & DAKOTAN ? PLAIN TALK
Determination, Perspective Drive Viborg-Hurley’s Hansen
BY DYLAN HUGGINS
sports@yankton.net
VIBORG — It doesn’t matter whether
it’s competing on the track or going
about his everyday life, Viborg-Hurley
senior Logan Hansen is determined to
be successful in whatever he does and
doesn’t take anything for granted.
“I’m really not afraid to give it all I’ve
got because when my brother was young
he passed away of a brain stem tumor
and I always think back to that because
I feel as though I am working for both
myself and my brother,” he said.
Hansen said that because his brother
passed at such an early age, he is reminded of how fortunate he is and that
he wants to put a complete effort into
everything he does.
“There are a lot of things I know he
didn’t get the chance to do because he
passed away so young and it’s just a
really important thing for me because
it just shows me how lucky I am to be
here,” he said. “It makes me want to give
everything I got because who knows
when it won’t be there anymore.”
Hansen’s only focus just isn’t on runViborg-Hurley’s Logan Hansen, 813, claims the Class B ning his own events. He also embraces
boys’ 400-meter dash title at the 2016 South Dakota State the opportunity to be a good teammate.
Track Meet. He also finished second in the 800 last season.
“I like to cheer on my team and give
them some encouragement,” he said. “If
somebody is running an event that they
don’t normally run, I like to give them
some encouragement and let know that
they’ll do well.”
Bill Hansen, Logan’s father and head
coach of the Viborg-Hurley track team,
said that Logan’s desire to want to be the
best, has helped contribute to the success he has on the track.
“Logan has always been very determined and when he was born premature
and he was in an ICU unit,” Bill said. “I’ve
had him in P.E and he had such a desire
not to lose and I think that’s where he
really came in to play with success and
even in cross country and school, he did
not like to lose no matter what he did.”
Bill said that how Logan approaches
the way he competes makes him proud
as a coach and a father.
“He’s such a coachable kid and his
desire to win and succeed is outstanding
and his relationships that he’s built with
not only his teammates, but those he
runs against,” he said. “He’s always going
to congratulate them when the race is
over and it doesn’t matter what uniform
he is wearing, that’s just the way he is.”
Hansen finished first in the 400-meter
dash and second in the 800-meter run at
the state track meet last year.
Logan said that he also contributes
his faith for having success on the track.
“I think one of the biggest things is
my faith,” he said. “Before every race, I’ll
pray and just to be able to do the very
best that I can helps to always give the
confidence and courage to run every
race.”
Hansen has signed with the University
of Sioux Falls, and will compete in track &
field and cross country for the Cougars.
“One of the things that I really
enjoyed about that school was the atmosphere,” he said. “It felt like a place
that I could call home and I really liked
talking to some of the track athletes and
coaches and it just felt right.”
Hansen said that right now he is
focused on building on the success that
he and his team had last year had last
season.
“Right now, I’m just kind of hoping to
continue the success that I had last year
because it was a fun year and everything
went well,” he said. “We’re off to a pretty
good start, so I just want to be able to
continue that and keep it going.”
