tanks.

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Agriculture (SDDA) encourages all agriculture producers and
businesses to take advantage of free pesticide container
recycling collection in 37 locations across the state from
Monday, July 10 until Thursday, Sept. 7.
“Many solid waste facilities do not take pesticide containers because they do not have enough staff to ensure
containers are properly prepared for disposal,” said SDDA
Agricultural Services Division assistant director Tom Gere.
“Recycling is the preferred way to dispose of them because
containers are removed from the solid waste stream and
the discarded materials can be reused.”
Only two and a half gallon containers or smaller that
previously contained crop protection products are accepted during these collection times. Larger containers
will be collected at a later arranged date and time.” Labels
must be removed and containers must be triple or pressure
rinsed to remove contaminants. Containers are ground up
and sent to a facility where the plastic is often used to make
drain tiles, speed bumps, fence posts or for other agricultural uses.

YANKTON, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says chip seal and fog seal applications will be
applied to several highways in the Yankton area of the state
beginning Tuesday, July 11.
The contractor will move from one project to the next in
the following order:
•Highway 44 – 10 miles, from the junction of 451st
Avenue to the intersection of highways 44 and 19 south of
Parker.
•Highway 37 – 11.5 miles, from the Missouri River north
to Springfield, including the spur into Running Water.
•Highway 37P – one mile, through the city of Springfield.
•Highway 50 – 11 miles, from west of the Charles Mix
County line to just west of the junction with Highway 37
south.
•Highway 37 – seven miles, from the Bon Homme/Hutchinson County line north to 284th Street
•Highway 46 – 13 miles, from the junction of Highway 46
to Highway 25.
Fog seal applications will be applied after the chip seals
are complete.

up to 15 minutes can be expected while traveling through
the work area.
Loose gravel will be present for a period of 36 to 72
hours after each day’s chip seal application. Traffic should
travel at 40 mph or the posted speed limit if it is less than
40 mph, during this time frame. The permanent pavement
markings are scheduled to be applied within 14 days of
completion of the chip and fog seal projects.
The Road Guy Construction Company, Inc. from Yankton
is the prime contractor on the $1.6 million project.
