10 Broadcaster Press South Dakota Department Of Veterans Affairs Partners With South Dakota Chapter Of Alzheimer’s Association PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs (SDDVA) and the South Dakota Chapter of Alzheimer’s Association (AA) announced a partnership to better connect South Dakota’s veterans with the resources for Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Together they are collaborating on outreach opportunities for veterans and their families to learn more about the educational materials, care and support services offered by the Alzheimer’s Association. It is estimated that 17,000 South Dakotans are living with Alzheimer’s, many of which are veterans. “We need to ease the burden of this disease for all who are impacted,” said Kathi Herreid, state director of the South Dakota Chapter of Alzheimer’s Association. Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia impacts every aspect of the caregiver’s daily life. As an Alzheimer’s patient loses one ability after another, a caregiver faces tests of stamina, problem solving, and resiliency. “Learning all we can about memory-related diseases is beneficial for our veterans, their families, and our staff,” said Brad Richardson, superintendent of the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home. “Increasing awareness about the resources available will enhance the lives of our veterans and their caregivers.” Richardson’s staff will have the opportunity to participate in a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association by wearing “End Alzheimer’s” t-shirts on Fridays and donating to the fund. SDSU Extension Has Some Tips To Help With Dandelion Control BROOKINGS, S.D. – Throughout the state, dandelions are running a couple of weeks behind normal, but they are starting to show. If herbicide wasn’t applied last fall, there are still a few things South Dakotans can do to control the yellow-flowered weed said Paul Johnson, SDSU Extension Weed Science Coordinator. “Dandelions thrive on cool damp weather. Dandelion is a perennial that can produce multiple flowers. With a large plant more than 50 flowers have been found to be produced with several seeds per flower,” Johnson said. He explained although spring treatments are not as effective as fall, they can be used to stop the yellow flowers from producing viable seed. Application tips Read and follow all directions and wear proper protective clothing. Herbicide treatments can be used either as a weed and feed type granule or as a liquid spray. The chemicals must enter thought the leaves. Spray products can be applied with a variety of equipment. Keep sprays coarse and use low pressure to reduce the chance of spray going on non-target sensitive plants. “Remember the older the dandelion the harder it will be to kill. Scattered plants can be dug but be sure to cut the root off below the ground so the crown is killed to avoid the plant coming back as a new plant,” Johnson said. Make a note on the calendar for fall to control the plants after the first frost so you do not need to be one of the people with a yellow lawn next spring. “Remember even if the lawn looks good this year seedlings can be back next year,” he said.
