through a great season.
Tennis: Our tennis girls finished
their season at State in Sioux
Falls during the 7th and 8th of
October. Vermillion brought six
girls to the state event, in which
we had two players score points
in the Singles Flights. Emma
Dalhoff competed in the first
flight and reached the
Consolation Semifinals falling to
Graham from Madison scoring
7.5 points for Vermillion. Emma
Jury was the other Tanager
scoring points Vermillion,
competing in the 4th Singles
Flight. Jury also made it to the
Consolation Semifinals, falling
to Reichert from Spearfish,
scoring 13 points for Vermillion.
VHS also competed in the
Doubles Rounds and had the
doubles team of Lauren
Mandernach and Hope
Schladoer make it into the
Consolation Semifinals,
receiving 10 points from their
doubles win. Vermillion High
School’s Girls’ Tennis team
ended state with 30.5 points
leaving them in 11th place. The
community of Vermillion is proud
of our tennis players and excited
to see where they can go in the
future. We would like to thank
VHS Tennis Coach, Kari
Jensen, in leading them in this
2019 season.
Boys Soccer: Vermillion HiIgh
School’s Tanager Boys’ Soccer
team also played a tough
season, ending their regular
season with a win on
September 26th against
Freeman Academy. The boys
qualified for the playoffs with a
record of 3-4-2, placing them
5th in our region. The Tanagers’
first playoff game was played on
October 8th in Groton, where
our boys scored five goals to
Groton’s one. As a result of the
boys bringing home the win,
they advanced into the second
round of the playoffs. Their next
game was against Sioux Falls
Christian, who was seeded 1st
in Regions. The boys played a
very back and forth game which
had everyone in the stands on
the edge of their seats. Sadly,
the Tanager boys lost to the
Chargers 3-2 after a long wellfought game. The team
represented what it means to be
a Tanager with good
sportsmanship and
determination.We would like to
recognize head coach, Kurt
Nelson, for guiding them
through this successful season.
Girls Soccer: The girls finished
their regular season on October
3rd in Dakota Valley. After a
long journey through this
season, the team finished in 6th
place with a record of 3-7-2.
This put them into the playoff
rounds, which is a single
elimination. Our girls played
their first playoff game against
at Sioux Falls Christain
Chargers on October 8th
(score?). Earlier this season,
the, Vermillion High School’s
Girls’ Soccer team both
defeated and tied the Chargers.
The ladies played tightly the
entire playoff game with the
Cchargers, but fell short losing
1-0. We are proud of our soccer
players and their coaches
Shannon Fitzsimmons, head
coach, who led our tangers

Boys Golf: Boys State Golf this
year took place at Vermillion’s
home course, the Bluffs. We
had four golfers representing
Vermillion, Willis
Robertson(VHS Sophomore),
Hunter Lavin(VHS Junior), Ben
Burbach(VHS Sophomore), and
TJ Tracy(VHS Sophomore). The
State Tournament is a two day
event where they take the total
of each day to find each golfer’s
individual placement in the
event and the combined team
total. Willis Robertson shot an
86 the first day and an 80 the
second, placing 7th, the best for
Vermillion. Hunter Lavin placed
16th with a 88 the first day and
83 the second. Ben Burbach
and TJ Tracy both placeds 43rd.
The Boys’ Golf Team had a very
successful season and we look
forward to watching them grow
next seasons because of our
young team. We would also like
to thank head coach, Kirk
Hogan, for leading our golf
