Beran, executive director & CEO of the South Dakota Board of Regents, said Nichols’ unique skill set was a strong selling point for the regents and the search committee. “From her South Dakota roots, she knows this state very well. She has established connections to higher education statewide,” Beran said. “We value her presidential experience, including a year as interim president at another South Dakota university. All of these qualities, and more, demonstrated that Laurie Nichols is the right person at the right time for Black Hills State University.” Prior to her work at BHSU, Nichols served for three years as the University of Wyoming’s president, the first woman to hold that post. From 2009 to 2016 she was provost and vice president for academic affairs at South Dakota State University. From 1994 to 2009 she was dean of family and consumer sciences, also at SDSU. In 2008 she was tapped to be the interim president at Northern State University. She was an American Council on Education fellow in 2006-07. Prior to that, she taught at secondary and post-secondary levels in South Dakota, Colorado, Nebraska, Ohio, Idaho, and Iowa. “I am excited to take a longer and more permanent view of providing leadership to Black Hills State University,” Nichols said. “I appreciate the confidence that the Board of Regents and Executive Director Beran have in me, and I look forward to working with the campus and community to create a positive future for BHSU.” A native of Colman, S.D., Nichols received her undergraduate degree in home economics education from SDSU. She holds a master’s degree in vocational and adult education from Colorado State University and a Ph.D. in family and consumer sciences education/family studies from The Ohio State University. Nichols succeeds Tom Jackson Jr., who became president at California’s Humboldt State University in July. Black Hills State University is the third largest institution in the South Dakota unified system of public higher education. Located in Spearfish, with an additional campus in nearby Rapid City, BHSU is home to 3,858 students, 131 full-time and 86 adjunct faculty, and 243 staff members. BHSU is a comprehensive institution offering 65 bachelors, nine masters, and seven associate degree programs through the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Business and Natural Sciences, and the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. Noem Statement On RFS Final Rule PIERRE, S.D. – Governor Kristi Noem today issued the following statement on the Environmental Protection Agency’s ruling to establish the required renewable volumes under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program for 2020: “President Trump made a promise to South Dakota farmers, and the rule the EPA announced today fails to hit that mark,” said Noem. “I appreciate the EPA’s efforts to bolster ethanol production across the country, but South Dakota producers deserve better. I will be communicating with EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler and President Trump on this issue.” In a joint October letter sent to the EPA from Noem and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Noem said that the agency’s proposed rules “demonstrate that EPA is oblivious to the harm it has caused.” In the past three years, the EPA has issued 85 small refinery waivers, representing a loss of over 4.3 billion gallons of biofuels. “While this rule needs more work, I’m grateful to the administration for fighting for American farmers and ranchers. I am glad to see the EPA building off our win to permit yearround sales of E-15 in their work to BroadcasterOnline.com Let Our Family Business Keep Yours In The Go With: • Farm Filters • Hydraulic Hoses • Bearings & Seals Cox Auto 1007 Broadway Ave Yankton, SD 605•665•4494 Irene-Wakonda Middle & High School Lunch Wednesday – No School Thursday – No School Friday – No School Monday – A. The decision was announced today, after a meeting of the presidential search committee Wednesday in Spearfish. “President Nichols has been a strong and steady hand at Black Hills State since we asked her to take an interim appointment last July,” said Regent Joan Wink of Howes, who has chaired the search process. “It became apparent to search committee members that our best candidate was right here, living in Spearfish and working at Black Hills State University. Laurie Nichols is highly respected by her peers and brings with her many years of prior experience in the South Dakota public higher education system. She has been doing a tremendous job as the interim president.” “I was delighted to return to my home state Irene-Wakonda School Breakfast Available every day: Breakfast entrée or Choice of cereals w/toast, Fruit, Milk Choices Wednesday – No School Thursday – No School Friday – No School Monday – A. Clay County Fair Board Annual Meeting Thursday, January 9th, 2020 6 pm 515 High St. Vermillion Clay County Extension Office sdclaycountyfair@gmail.com hazards and cause fires when not used properly. Home fires are always a threat during the holidays. Fire Marshal Paul Merriman said the potential for fires is higher than usual because more heating sources are being used. “With more lights, more candles, more cooking, more fireplaces, and more space heaters being used, the chances of a home fire increase at this time of the year,” he said. “Use holiday lighting safely, never leave burning candles unattended, practice cooking safety and, if you have a real Christmas tree, make sure it is adequately watered to prevent it from becoming too dry.” No matter what time of year, Merriman said home fire safety must also include smoke alarms. He suggested testing smoke alarms regularly to ensure there are working smoke alarms on each level of the home, in each bedroom, and adjacent to sleeping areas. Other holiday fire safety tips listed by Merriman include: Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant. Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn. Keep children and pets away from lit candles. Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop. Keep children at least three feet away from the stove, oven, hot food and liquids. Steam or splash from vegetables, gravy, or coffee could cause serious burns. Turn off lights and extinguish candles before leaving the house or going to bed. The South Dakota Fire Marshal’s Office is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. Noem Statement On House Passage Of USMCA PIERRE, S.D. - Governor Kristi Noem today released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA): “The USMCA is chock-full of wins for South Dakota, and I’m thrilled that the House finally passed the agreement. Ninety-five percent of the world’s consumers live outside our borders, and this agreement sets a framework where farmers and ranchers can thrive. Through the USMCA, Canada’s unfair milk pricing will be eliminated so South Dakota dairy farmers gain more export opportunities. Poultry producers will have new access for chicken and egg exports and expanded access for turkey exports. Small businesses will benefit from new rules that make it easier to tap into foreign markets and participate in cross-border trade. There are big wins for the auto industry and new standards to improve wages and labor conditions. I was proud to help negotiate this agreement when I served in Congress, and I’m grateful for the strong support it has received from Representative Johnson, Senator Thune, and Senator Rounds. South Dakota's farmers and ranchers produce the world’s best products, and this agreement will allow those goods to be sold in a marketplace that is fair, open, and competitive.” Vermillion Fastpitch Registration Wednesday, January 15, 2020 7:00pm-8:00pm National Guard Armory For 10u, 12u, 14u and 16u teams for the upcoming summer season
