ESTATE Braille And Talking Book Extends Its Reach To The VPL The South Dakota State Library Braille and Talking Book Program has established an audio book depository at the Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library. The depository is available to anyone who has a visual impairment that prevents them from seeing print, a physical disability that prevents holding materials and/ or turning the pages, or a learning disability caused by an organic dysfunction. In order to receive the service, individuals must register with the State Library Braille and Talking Book Program. Registration materials are available by contacting the Circulation Desk at the Public Library. Once registered, an individual will receive his or her own audio book player. Books can be mailed directly to a participant’s home, or they can be checked out at the VPL. Prospective patrons can also borrow a digital machine along with books to try listening to a book. Registered patrons can borrow a machine if their player isn’t operating correctly and books if they run short of their own. There is no charge for this service. Talking books are available on digital cartridges. Not only can digital books be mailed directly to participants, but those who have access to the Internet can view a catalog of digital books. From this catalog, participants can select a book they want to read, download the book to a USB standard flash drive or blank digital cartridge, and listen to the book on the digital player. Books can also be downloaded to their Apple devices or Android devices (excluding Kindle Fire) using the BARD Mobile app. If a participant does not have access to the Internet, staff at the VPL can assist in downloading books. All a participant needs is a USB standard flash drive. To learn more about the audio book collection, contact the Public Library at 605-677-7060, or the South Dakota State Library Braille and Talking Book Program at 800-423-6665.
