Brendan Johnson, U.S.
Attorney for the District of
South Dakota, said his
office is making human
trafficking and abuse its
number-one priorities.
“Here in South Dakota,
we’re not immune (to
these issues),” he said.
Johnson discussed the
topic during a meeting
with the attendees of
South Dakota American
Legion Auxiliary 2014
Girls State, which is
currently taking place at
the University of South
Dakota.
“In the history of the
United States, 13 men have
received life sentences for
commercial sex
trafficking. Three of those
have come from South
Dakota in the last four
years,” he told the
audience at the Tuesday
morning assembly in Aalfs
Auditorium.
“What we want to do is
send a message loud and
clear: If you engage in this,
if this is what you do in
South Dakota, we’re going
to put you away for the
rest of your life,” he said.
When Johnson took
over as U.S. Attorney
about five years ago, South
Dakota had never
prosecuted a sex
trafficking case before.
That’s no longer the
case, Johnson said, with
the state handing out the
longest-ever sentence for
human trafficking in the
country in one instance.
One of the keys to
combating the issue is
training for all law
enforcement officers in the
state.
With training, an
officer will see a woman in
a prostitution case not as a
criminal, but as a potential
victim, Johnson said.
The most common
demographics for female
victims in sex trafficking
are being 13-30 years old,
usually closer to 13, drug
and alcohol abuse, and
coming from homes with
limited supervision, he
said.
“One of the biggest
causes I think we see is,
oftentimes, young females
are gravitating to someone
that initially they consider
a father figure,” he said.
“Because this isn’t a (case)
where the trafficker says,
‘Hey, how would you like
to become a teen
prostitute?’”
Another priority of
Johnson’s office is violence
against women in general,
he said.
That includes all

• Private Drives
• Unpaved Roads
• Elevator Access
• Free Estimates

communities, he said.
“One out of three
Native American women
will be sexually assaulted
in their lifetime,” Johnson
said. “One out of three.
That’s the highest
percentage for any group
in the United States. …
“That’s not an Indian
problem, that’s not a
reservation problem, that’s
a South Dakota problem,”
he said.
Johnson asked that the
Girls State attendees
consider taking a career in
law.
“I’m a big believer that
in many instances women
make the best
prosecutors,” he said.
“With the male
attorneys in our office, if
there’s a promotion, when
it comes to applying for
that job they all think
they’re ready, but they’re
not,” he said. “With the
females, it’s harder
sometimes to get them to
seize the opportunity,
because so many of the
female attorneys I have in
my office say, ‘You know
what? I don’t think I’m
experienced enough, I
don’t think I’m qualified
enough to go for the
promotion.’”
Johnson advised the
girls to seize opportunities
even if they don’t think
they’re ready to take them
on.
“Your mindset needs to
be, ‘This is something I
want to do, and this is
something I can learn to
do while I’m doing it.’ Be
bold. Be aggressive. You
are the future leaders of
tomorrow, and we need
you,” he said.
