Sioux Point Road, Dakota Dunes, SD. Weekend Masses: Saturday, 4:30 p.m.; Sunday, 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Meet Marije Wright By David Lias david.lias@plaintalk.net When Alafia and Marije Wright noticed that some of the commercial products commonly found in households weren’t being particularly kind to them – including their three children – they decided to do something about it. The result? The creation of God’s Green Earth, a company that creates and sells toxic-free products for the home and body. “About a year ago, we started making all of our own soap and lotion and household cleaners,” Marije said Thursday from her booth at the Vermillion Farmers Market, where a variety of products are offered for sale. “We got rid of everything that you buy in the store, because they were making us sick at One & two bedroom apartments. Scotland Apartments, 821 Main St. Scotland, SD 57059. Laundry. Rental assistance available to those who qualify. For appointments or applications please call 605-624-5218 or visit www.oakleafpm.com. Equal Housing Opportunity home.” They launched their line of products for sale to the public at the Downtown Sustainability Fair and Farmers Market held on March 24 as part of Vermillion’s Earth (Every) Day celebration. “We wanted to be pretty confident about the quality of our product,” she said. God’s Green Earth offers various bars of soap – some that are vegan – and soap made with goat’s milk purchased from one of the local Farmer’s Market vendors. “We make lotions, body butters, sunscreen, sugar scrubs, deodorant, lip balm,” Marije said. “We also have shampoo and body wash, all-purpose cleaner, and I make laundry soap. “I have eczema, and all of our kids have eczema, and I was noticing that I was always itchy and breaking out, and whenever I used stuff I would buy at the store, it would make it worse,” she said. They eliminated gluten, soy, and dairy from their diets. The family also learned, through watching a documentary, of the positive lifestyle changes that some people experience when avoiding commercial cleaning and toiletry products. Marije, who was raised in the Netherlands, said her European upbringing has left her with “a green mentality. I was feeling pretty bad about all of the chemicals that were going down my drain. On top of that, my son has eczema really, really bad. We started making our own stuff and we noticed that our kids, who had been on tons on prescriptions, like steroids and special creams and lotions multiple times a day … since we started using our own products, I hardly have to go the pharmacy,” she said.
