the Law Enforcement
Torch Run leading up to
the opening ceremonies
of the 2014 USA Special
Olympic Games in New
Jersey.
As a “Guardian of the
Flame,” Cole, along with
other chosen law
enforcement officials and
athletes on his running
team, will spread
awareness about the
Special Olympics.
The route will take the
groups through New York
City, Philadelphia and
New Jersey.
Only one law
enforcement officer from
every state is selected to
participate for this
honorable detail.
Officer Cole has been
heavily involved with
Special Olympics South
Dakota and the Law
Enforcement Torch Run
(LETR) for over six years
and is currently the
assistant director for
LETR in South Dakota.
He has participated in
and helped organize
many fundraising events
to include: Tip-A-Cop,
Poker Runs, and Polar
Plunges, all to raise funds
and awareness for Special
Olympics.
Officer Cole
encourages other law
enforcement to get
involved with LETR and
Special Olympics and
speaks to the new officers
in training at the Law
Enforcement Training
Center in Pierre.
Special Olympics
celebrates special needs
athletes and is held at the
local, state and national
levels, culminating with
the world games every
two years.

“The Flame of Hope”
signifies the start of the
games, of course, but also
the hard work and
determination that the
athletes have put in.
Besides being an actual
running event, the Law
Enforcement Torch Run is
a worldwide movement in
which law enforcement
officials spend the year
raising awareness and
money for Special
Olympics through a
variety of fundraising
efforts.
Special Olympics
began in 1968 when
Eunice Kennedy Shriver
organized the First
International Special
Olympics Games at
Soldier Field in Chicago,
IL.
The concept was born
in the early 1960s when
Shriver started a day
camp for children with
learning disabilities. She
saw that people with
learning disabilities were
far more capable in sports
and physical activities
than many thought. Since
1968, millions of children
and adults with learning
disabilities have
participated in Special
Olympics.
The Law Enforcement
Torch Run began in 1981
by Wichita Kansas Police
Chief Richard LaMunyon
and is now Special
Olympics' largest grassroot fundraiser and
public awareness vehicle.
More than 85,000 law
enforcement officers
carried the "Flame of
Hope" in 35 nations,
raising awareness and
funds for Special
Olympics.
