Weekend Masses: Saturday, 4:30 p.m.; Sunday, 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Meet Callie Hisek By David Lias david.lias@plaintalk.net Taking on the task of supervising all of the components of a major musical production can be quite the adventure. Callie Hisek is up to the challenge. Callie currently has her hands full, working with cast and crew as the director of the Vermillion Community Theatre’s upcoming production of the musical “Oliver!” “The challenges include seeing how this production fits with this group of actors,” she said. “I came on board once the VCT board had already selected to do ‘Oliver!’ I was unfamiliar with this musical before jumping on board, so it was a lot of fun to begin working on a musical that I have no knowledge of.” Callie has been focusing her efforts on working with the production team and the VCT board to learn the processes that have worked well and led to a long string of successful productions by the community theatre in Vermillion over the years. “There are so many actors here who have performed together already. It was really interesting during the rehearsal process and even during auditions to see all of that – the friendships and the reuniting of everything,” she said. “It was a lot of fun seeing that community has already been built.” Callie is originally from Dubuque, IA, and lived in Ames, IA, for a time before coming to Vermillion to study at the University of South Dakota. She just graduated from USD with a master in fine arts degree in directing. She admits feeling like the new kid on the block at first, but is quickly growing familiar with the local cast and crew, and learning how to best communicate her vision of the show to them. “This cast has a lot of energy and a lot of excitement, and you can tell that they really love to do this. That just drives me to want to jump on board with them,” Hisek said. “We always have long days, and especially Turn Yo ur Clutter i nto Cash!
