While students are away,
workers are busy at MUC

Although the building
is devoid of most of the
student population, work
continues at the Muenster
University Center
(MUC).
The grounds west of
the building currently are
bare of grass, and have a
shallow trench running
through them due to the
installation of
underground piping for
an irrigation system.
“If you were over there
around graduation time,
there was a lot of wood
chip mulch on the
ground, and they did that
so it wouldn’t be mud
during graduation. They
always intended to go
back,” said Tena
Haraldson, director of
communications and
media relations at USD.
Haraldson said she is
unsure of everything that
is being planted in the
area, but added there will
be grass, and may be
some shrubs.
The work has been
hampered somewhat by
the amount of rain
Vermillion has received
this summer, she said.
“On the west side there
it was kind of a lake for a
while,” Haraldson said.
Haraldson said she
does not know if there is
a specific deadline for the
outdoor work to be
completed.
“Certainly, though,
they want it to be well-
rooted and ready for
when students return the
third week of August,” she
said. “The sooner they
can get it in and get the
grass going, the more
chance it’ll have to get
settled before the kids
come back.”
In addition to that
work, tasks are being
completed on the inside
of the MUC, as well.
Last week the “link”
between the MUC and
I.D. Weeks Library was
closed for several days so
workers could install new
carpeting and remove
furniture so it could be
re-covered.
“We consider both
normal maintenance
since the furnishings are
now five years old,”
Haraldson said in an email.
The MUC opened in
February 2009, and has
scarcely had a quiet
moment since.
Just two years later
USD President James
Abbott announced the
building would be
expanded – a project later
budgeted at $11.6
million.
The expansion began
in the fall of 2012 with
exterior work. Through
the next spring and
summer steal beams were
placed, floors were
poured and the exterior
enclosure was started.
For a time, the “link”
between the original
MUC building and the
I.D. Weeks Library was
