04 Broadcaster Press August 5, 2014 www.broadcasteronline.com Burbank man will be honored Aug. 2 Chicago native joins PT staff Alan Dale, a native of Chicago, is a graduate of University of Arizona with degrees in journalism and history. He has 15 years total experience as a reporter with his last seven coming in the Northwest with his most recent stop being a two-year stint as a sports reporter for Butte’s The Montana Standard. In his earlier years, Dale worked and operated the Greek Review monthly along with four other college classmates covering news and sports affairs of the Fraternity/Sorority system. Most of his career has been sports focused, but he has plenty of experience covering news and writing on entertainment items and penning columns covering a wide range of topics. He is glad to be in Vermillion and back in the Midwest. “The Midwest is my home and it’s where I have felt I have always belonged,” he said. “Combine that with the fact that the area and South Dakota in particular have grown so much with such a strong, forward thinking approach to everyday life … how can you beat a place like this? “So far my experience here in Vermillion has been very positive and I hope to give back a lot of time, sweat, and effort to a town that deserves the best from myself and the Plain Talk.” Hobbies include outdoor activities, playing and watching sports, watching movies, listening to music, and reading. Tell them you saw it in the Broadcaster! APPROX 44 ACRES OF CLAY COUNTY SD FARMLAND Thuente named director of marketing and promotions University of South Dakota has tabbed Northwestern University’s Joe Thuente as its new director of marketing and promotions. Thuente will begin at USD on Aug. 12. “It is a privilege to be joining the team at USD,” said Thuente. “This is an exciting time to be a Coyote and I think we are poised for big things moving forward. I can’t wait to get started.” A native of Johnston, IA, Thuente earned a degree in business management from University of Northern Iowa in 2009 and received his master’s in intercollegiate athletics leadership from University of Washington the following year. He began his professional career as a marketing intern at Northwestern in early 2010 and was hired full-time as a marketing assistant that summer. He was promoted to assistant director of marketing in 2011 and has served in that role since. At Northwestern, Thuente is responsible for marketing, promotions and event management for volleyball, women’s basketball, wrestling, softball and field hockey. In prior years, he served baseball and lacrosse. He recently set program records for single-game and THUENTE season-long attendance and revenue in volleyball, wrestling and baseball. He’s overseen all video board and scoreboard elements for men’s basketball and oversaw Wildcat Alley – a fan tailgating area before football games. At USD, Thuente will annually develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and promotions plan to maximize ticket revenue and spectator attendance for Missouri Valley (FCS) football and NCAA Division I Summit League basketball as well as 14 other Division I sports. He will also oversee game-day marketing and promotional activities for Coyote athletics. SIOUX FALLS – Adam Grimm, winner of the 2013 federal duck stamp competition, will be honored at a celebration at the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks (SDGFP) Outdoor Campus at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 2. Grimm, from Burbank, will display his artwork and sign stamps. Adam’s daughter Madison Grimm, who is a recent winner of the Junior Duck Stamp competition, will also be in attendance. The event will be held in conjunction with SDGFPs 2014 Outdoor University family weekend, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free to the public and there are several different activities for the entire family, including canoeing, rock climbing, fishing and outdoor cooking. Stamps signed by the artists will be available for purchase the day of the event. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the federal duck stamp. Since its enactment in 1934, this landmark initiative has generated almost a billion dollars – paid for and supported by waterfowl hunters, refuge visitors, conservationists, and stamp collectors – to conserve more than 6 million acres of wetlands across the United States. Hunters, bird watchers and other outdoor recreationists, art and stamp collectors, and many other people who want to invest in wetland conservation buy federal duck stamps. Ninety-eight cents of every dollar raised through stamp purchases conserves critical wildlife and wetland habitat for future generations. Proceeds from the sale of Duck Stamps are used to buy or lease wetlands and associated upland habitats for inclusion in the National Wildlife Refuge System. The stamp is a required purchase for hunters 16 years of age or older, and a current Federal Duck Stamp provides admission into any national wildlife refuge. The Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program is a dynamic, art and science program designed to teach wetlands habitat and waterfowl conservation to students in kindergarten through high school and help reconnect youth with the outdoors. The program guides students, using scientific and wildlife observation principles, to communicate visually what they have learned through an entry into the junior duck stamp art contest. This nontraditional pairing of subjects brings new interest to both the sciences and the arts. 10 ANNUAL PRIMITVE AUCTION 10TH ANNUAL PRIMITIVE AUCTION TH SATURDAY, AUGUST 9, 2014 Located: Hartington, Nebraska-Cedar County Fairgrounds (Fairgrounds are located on east edge of Hartington, Nebr.)
