Meet Doug
Peterson
By David Lias

The newest member of
the Vermillion School
Board is still doing his
homework with the goal
of doing the best job
possible for patrons of
the Vermillion School
District.
Doug Peterson, a
psychology professor at
the University of South
Dakota, ran unopposed
for the school board last
spring. He began his term
on the board July 14.
“I’ve been talking with
the people involved (with
the school), meeting with
the district offices, and
also reading publications
put out by the South
Dakota Association of
School Boards, and the
American Association of
School Boards – not just
to get the specific issues
here, but to also
understand the broader
context of various issues
and how they impact
Vermillion,” he said.
Peterson and his wife
have lived in Vermillion
for about 18 years. They
are the parents of seven
children – two have
graduated from the local
school system; the
remaining five attend
Vermillion public
schools.
“I really hope to get to
know the district through
interaction, he said.
“With five kids in the
district, I see it from their
side, but that’s not the
only side of any story.”
Peterson said a give
something back to the
community eventually
inspired him to seek
office on the school
board.
“I was speaking with a
friend of mine, and
talking about how do we
continue to make the
communities in which we
live better, and he said,
‘Honestly, the only way to
do that is to stay
involved.’”
Peterson said he
decided to focus his
efforts toward local
education.
“This is where I want
to try to contribute to
making the community of
Vermillion and the
Vermillion School
District stronger and
better,” he said.
“Obviously, my first
priority is meeting the
needs of the students in
the district, but that then
trickles into everything

else.
“You can’t do that if
you don’t work with the
teachers and the
administration and the
taxpayers and everyone
else,” he said.
Peterson began
attending Vermillion
School Board meetings
last March, at about the
time he filed his petitions
to become a board
candidate.
“I’m still getting a feel
for exactly what is there,
but I think that some
things I would definitely
like to work on is to make
sure that we can get the
best teachers we can in
the district, and that we
can do what we can to
keep them,” he said. “I
know that is a challenge.
We are located close to
states that pay
considerably better, but I
don’t think it’s always
about salary.
“I think we can work
to hire the best teachers
that we can, make sure
that they feel valued,
because when that
happens, I believe that’s
what creates the best
educational environment
for students, which is
always the ultimate goal,”
Peterson said.
He hopes to help
people who reside in the
district to get a better
understanding of the
overall operation of the
local public school
system, including its
funding methods.
“It’s a complicated

funding mechanism – it
functions differently than
almost any type of
business – and I think
making sure that
everyone understands the
complexities of it
hopefully will help
alleviate the misnomers
that come with that,”
Peterson said.
His work as an
educator at the university,
he said, likely won’t
influence his decisions as
he and other school
board members tackle
issues facing the district.
“I’m quick to
recognize that teaching at
the college level and
teaching in a K-12 system
are two very different
things,” Peterson said.
“My students don’t have
to be there every day.
There’s a classroom
management aspect that
goes far beyond what I
have to do.”
He has worked as a
volunteer in Vermillion
schools, and done some
guest teaching at the
elementary and middle
schools.
“I have the utmost
respect for the people
who do that every day,”
he said. “They don’t just
educate the youth of
district, but care for
them, and are really
molding them to become
the future of the
community.
“While I think my
experience led me to
wanting to be involved
here, I really have to trust
the folks who do it day in
and day out,” Peterson
said, “to be the ones who
help me to understand
what the schools need,
what the students need,
and how we can meet
those to the best of our
ability under the current
budget model.”
