 When driving through
 town on Cherry Street,
 it’s hard to miss Quality
 Motors, a business that
 has been there for almost
 25 years.
 In an office where
 customers and employees
 alike are on a first-name
 basis, owner Troy
 Gregoire said he strives to
be of service to the town
 he has known his whole
 life.
 “We work so hard to
 get some of the nicest
 pre-owned cars on this
 lot,” he said. “We just
 want people to know
 they’re getting the best
 pre-owned car they can
 possibly get.”
 Gregoire said it was his
 desire to provide the best
 possible cars that inspired
 the businesses’ name.
 “When we started this
 business, we put our
 name on there, ‘Quality
 Motors’ not just ‘Joe’s
 used cars,’” Gregoire said.
“These cars are all handpicked by me. I don’t have
 a buyer out buying these
 cars for me. They’re all
 front-line ready. They’re
 all reconditioned. They’re
 nice cars. People can buy
 the cars and know they’re
 getting a nice solid car

that’s going to take care of
 them for years to come.
 These are in really good
 shape.”
 Gregoire said he enjoys
 the small-town feel of
 running a business,
 though he hasn’t ever
 worked in larger cities.
 “The only thing I can
 do is compare to other
 dealers that have the same
 inventory as us,” he said.
 “They have really quick
 turnover, the dealers in
 Sioux Falls because there’s
 so many more people.”
In a town where a high
 percentage of residents
 are college students,
 Gregoire said most
 customers out to buy cars
 come from the permanent
 community.
 “A lot of students for
service but as far as auto
 sales we’re probably at the
 25-55 age bracket,” he
 said.
 And what can a buying
 customer expect when
 they come in?
 “All late-model used,”
 Gregoire said. “Any car
that comes in goes to the
 back room and gets
 completely checked out.
 We make sure it’s ready
 for the road when it
 comes out front.”
 According to Gregoire,
 though the cars come
 from a variety of sources

Quality Motors, owned by Vermillion native Troy Gregoire,
has over two decades of reliable service under its belt.
 (Thomas Hatzenbuhler)

 including other dealers,
 auctions and even people
 off the street, they have
 one thing in common.
“The big thing for us is
 low miles,” he said.
 “Vermillions like low
 miles. Lot of other towns
they get by selling highermileage cars but in
 Vermillion the people like
 low-mileage cars. It’s just
 what sells in this town.”
 Gregoire’s history with
 cars extends far beyond
 the 25 years of running
 Quality Motors.
 “All the way through
 school I worked on cars,
he said. “I had a lot of
 cars through high school
 and liked the business
and it was a lot of fun.”
 When he first began
 the business, Gregoire

 said he was faced with
 some unique challenges
 for a car salesman.
 “I started this when I
was 20 years old,” he said.
 “I can remember when I
 first started. I flew into
Florida to buy cars and I
 couldn’t rent a car
 because I wasn’t old
enough. I think it was 21
 to rent a car.”
 Gregoire said he is a
 Vermillion native but
 went to school in
 Brookings where he
 majored in general
 agriculture, intending to
 pursue farming.
 “My family is all
 farmers north of town,”
he said. “The time I got
