 USD Law School honors
 Attorney General
 Marty Jackley
 By Sarah Wetzel
 For the Plain Talk

 Last Wednesday the
 Student Bar Association
 for the University of
 South Dakota School of
 Law recognized Attorney
 General Marty Jackley and
 awarded him ‘Volunteer of
 the Year’ for his incredible
 show of service to the
 school.
 “The Student Bar
 Association Volunteer
 Service Award recognizes
 an individual who has
 given their time to the
 student organization and
 the law school,” said
 Jennifer June Harvey,
 President of the Student
 Bar Association. “South
 Dakota Attorney General
 Marty Jackley has been
 chosen for the Law School
 Service Award for the
 numerous trips he has
 made to the law school,
 never at the law school’s
 expense.”
 Even though trips to
 Vermillion come out of
 Jackley’s own pocket,
 according to him it is
 worth it.
 “It has really been easy
for me to come out to the
 law school because people
 are willing to listen and
 frankly our best lawyers
 come from this school,”
 Jackley said. “I’m the one
 that should be recognizing
 the school, faculty and the
 students for all that you’ve
 given us.”
 Harvey said that
 Jackley was also chosen
based on the fact that he
 provides informative and
 inspirational

 presentations and has
 created numerous
 internship and job
 opportunities for law
 school students.
 “Thank you to the
 Student Bar Association
 for selecting me,” Jackley
 said. “Everybody has said
 such nice things.”
 According to Dr. Roger
 Baron, one of the law
 school’s professors, Jackley
 was recently re-elected as
 Attorney General with a
 staggering 82% of the
 votes.
 “That’s got to be some
 sort of record,” Baron
 said. “I also learned this
 morning that Marty is
currently the Presidentelect of the National
 Association of Attorneys
 General. This is a national
 organization comprised of
 Attorney Generals from all
 50 states. I know you don’t
 get a position like that
 without also willing to be
 of service.”
 “Marty is the epitome
 of service,” Baron said.
“He has set an example for
 me in my personal life
that I strive to model after.
On every one of his visits
 he’s always talked to me
 privately and said, ‘What
can I do for you? What
can I do for the law
 school?’”
 One thing he has done
 is creating internship and
 employment
 opportunities, according
 to Baron.
 “He’s opened up a
 number of positions,”
 Baron said. “He created
 positions that weren’t
 there before at the

 Attorney General’s office
 right off the bat and
 started hiring interns
 there. Some of those are
 successful lawyers
 today...He continues that
 tradition.”
 This is a tradition of
 service that started long
 before Jackley became
 Attorney General.
 “This school has done
 so much for me,” Jackley
 said. “It has really made
my career continue on in a
 path that I’ve enjoyed and
I owe that to the school so
 if there’s anything I can
 do, I’m committed as long
 as the students are willing
 to listen to me.”
 “When he first became
 US attorney in 2006 I
asked him to speak to my
 civil procedures class and
 he came,” Baron said.
 “He’s come every year
 since then.”
 According to Baron,
 Jackley is always willing to
 go the extra mile, giving
 personal attention to the
students by speaking oneon-one to them in the
 hallways after class.
 “Marty’s always been a
friend to me, a friend to
 the law school,” Baron
 said. “He brings a message
 of hope. First year
students kind of live in a
 constant cloud of doom
 anyway. His comments are
 usually well received by
 the first year students to
 think that you can actually
 do something with this
 degree in addition to just
 being a practicing lawyer.”
 This is a view expressed
 by Alafia Wright, one of
 the first-year students.

 “It’s really great to see
 the quality of education
 that’s provided by the law
school and what it can do
 for your future career,”
 Wright said. “He was born
 in South Dakota. He came
 to school at the University
 of South Dakota’s school
of law and was able to take
 that educational
 experience and transform
 himself into a leader in
 the public service. So for
 somebody like myself who
 looks to go into public
 service he’s a great role
 model in terms of hard
 work and doing the best
that he can to give back to
his nation and his state so
 it was a great opportunity
 to hear from him.”
 As he accepted the
 award, Jackley took the
 opportunity to give some
 of his famous
 inspirational words to the
 students who had
 gathered to hear him.
 “When I came here
 about 22 years ago I was a

 scared little engineer that
 didn’t know what I was
 doing,” he said. “What I’ve
 learned is that the faculty
 cares so much about you
 and your careers and they
 will stay with you
 throughout your careers.
 The teachers that I’ve had,
 they’ve all followed me,
 helped me anytime along
 the way. They won’t forget
 about you.”
 Even as it has become
 more difficult for Jackley
 to visit the school, he
 continues to show that he
 has not forgotten the

 students either.
 “I think coming to
 Vermillion when he lived
 in Sioux Falls was
 relatively easy to work
 into his schedule,” said
 Baron. “Coming from
 Pierre is a little more
 difficult but he’s never
 hesitated to give us the
 highest priority to come
here and take care of our
 needs.”
