ent and achievement in things of the spirit and of the
mind at least a fraction of the honors and rewards
accorded to their athletic classmates for demonstrating their bodily skills.Ó That quote and the fact I
submitted and survived not winning anything last
year, motivated me to participate in the contest this
year. I’ve never been very confident in my art, but I
worked really hard on both pieces. If I didnÕt get an
award, then I just didn’t get an award. So, I figured
IÕd go for it.
As I was making myself coffee on January
8th, my phone notified me that I had received an
email. The subject line read, ÒCongratulations on
Your Scholastic Art Award!Ó To my surprise, both
of my pieces had received awards; one a silver key
and one a gold key. Being recognized by such a huge
competition made me honestly reconsider what occupation I wanted. It made me feel valuable. I felt
validated as an ÒartistÓ to know that all of the work

ALL-STATE BAND
BY STEPHANIE MAGANA
O
nce every year during the month
of January, students across South
Dakota head to one of six audition
centers designated by the four AllState adjudicators. The four adjudicators traveled around the state to select
the top high school musicians for the
All-State Band. All-State Band is part
of the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA). Students from ninth to twelfth grade, enrolled in high schools partnered with
SDHSAA, are eligible to represent
their schools in the competition. Stu-
dent musicians are divided into two
separate bands, Clark Band and Lewis
Band, and each band has its own guest
conductor. A few musicians from our
school auditioned and VHS senior Logan Wadley was selected to play the
tuba in the Clark Band.
Students who have been selected from the competitive auditions
held around the state will meet at the
Johnson Fine Arts Center in Aberdeen,
SD on March 21-23, 2019, for the AllState rehearsal and concert.
