A PROVEN GREAT
usic can have different purposes, depending on the goals of the artist who
makes it. Some aims to be a show of
technical excellence, others are the work of songwriters pouring all their emotion into their work
and some music just aims to be fun and enjoyable
to listen to. It takes a special brilliance to craft an
album that features all three. Television captured
that brilliance and put it to record on their 1977
debut, Marquee Moon.
ÒSee No EvilÓ is a perfect opener, as it
shows the bandÕs background in the New York
punk scene they helped form, as well as their
arty intention. The propulsive rock rhythm is a
great background for front man Tom VerlaineÕs
lyrics and vocals, which are evocative but never
overwrought. His call-and-response shouts with
the rest of the band (which feature on numerous
songs) give the tracks a classic feel. However,
itÕs the next song, ÒVenusÓ, which shows what
truly makes the album phenomenal. The cleansounding guitars are simply so pleasant to listen
to. Verlaine sounds like heÕs having so much fun
singing without coming off goofy. ÒFrictionÓ continues the openerÕs rock groove, and also features
Richard LloydÕs bursts of guitar leads. The ten
minute long title track which follows is seen as the
apex of TelevisionÕs career. The dueling guitars of
Lloyd and Verlaine soar in their respective solos,
and a fake ending brings the song back to its glo-
rious motif, with the rock steady rhythm section
of Billy Ficca and Fred Smith keeping the song
grounded. VerlaineÕs singing is passionate, and
his reflective lyrics about life and death are smart
but never pretentious. ÒElevationÓ opens the sec-
ond half in a moody fashion with its minor key
never letting go of a somber demeanor. ÒGuiding LightÓ and ÒProve ItÓ are enjoyable tracks of
twinkly guitar pop occurring before the album
closes with the climactic ÒTorn CurtainÓ, which
is one of my favorite songs of all time. The song
is slow and dark, the relic of a neo-noir film that

The first thing you are going to
need is a deck of cards. Shuffle the cards
and then set out 15 cards face up in a
5x3 format. After this you’re going to
ask your spectator to pick any card out
of the 15; do not have them take it out.
Ask your spectator to point to the column it is in without directly pointing to
their card.
After they do this, keep the cards
in order and pick up the three columns.
Make sure you pick up the column with
their card in it second. Deal out the cards
face up from left to right back into that
5x3 format. Ask them what column their
never was. What makes the song truly amazing
is Tom VerlaineÕs performance, which is some of
the best and most expressive guitar playing ever
put to record. For the first three and a half minutes
he appears only from the shadows occasionally,
adding a melody and slow bend here and there.
But for the last three and half minutes, which is
essentially one long guitar solo, he doesnÕt hold
back. IÕm seriously convinced he collected the
souls of the other band members before recording. With each bend of his string his guitar sobs,
each note a different tear. The fade out at the
end implies he might not have been done, and
it leaves me wanting more. ItÕs a shame the few
records they released after this never even came
close to it.
I wonder how it feels to make a piece
of art so transcendent. Were the members of
the band aware that they were working on what
would be one of the best albums ever? I suppose
it doesnÕt matter, as either way, Marquee Moon
stood the test of time to be one of the best pieces
of music in the modern era.

card is in.
Now just repeat the previous
steps two times. When youÕve completed that, deal the cards into three piles
face down. Remember where you put
the eighth card because that is their card!
After this, ask them to pick two piles,
take the two that they picked, and take
them out. When you have them pick the
two piles your going to give the impression that they have a choice (see video
in QR code for a more in depth description). Now youÕre going to spread the
last pile out (the last pile should have the
eighth card in it) and ask them to pick
three cards. Keep the eighth card in.
Then take the three cards and
take them out. Now youÕre down to two
cards; one of them is the eighth card,
have them pick one. If they pick the correct card, perfect. If they do not, take the
card they picked and take it out. Then
all you have to do is ask them what their
card was and show it to them.

Torii Con Descends on
Torii Con Descends on USD
BY REYANNA FELICIA
T
orii Con is a free anime convention which focuses on anime, manga, and
Japanese culture. This year, Torii Con occurred on February 9th starting at
10 am lasting until 10 pm. There were competitive events such as Anime Music
Video contests, cosplay contests, lip sync battles and game tournaments, along
with an area dedicated to selling merchandise and crafts. Panels, games, cosplay
and interactions with people with the same interests all occurred during the convention. Panels are usually held by a host who gave presentations and an interview with a guest. People attending ask questions and find out interesting things
about their favorite characters.
The name ÒTorii ConÓ originally comes from the Japanese Torii stand
which represents a gate to shrines which is a sacred, symbolic mark. The past five
years, Torii Con has been at the same place, the USD Muenster University Center, lasting one day. Originally, it began on February 22nd, 2015 and was hosted
by the USD anime club. The numbers of attendees have been steadily growing
every year. Hopefully in a few years there will be a collaboration with other bigger conventions.
Cosplayers came to the convention. Friends were made and fun was had.
The fifth Torii Con was a major success.
