Portice, Landry and
Moen to be honored
with alumni awards
Three distinguished
alumni from the
University of South
Dakota will be honored
with Alumni Achievement
Awards during Dakota
Days. Recipients will be
presented with awards
during the alumni dinner
at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4
at the Muenster
University Center. Tickets
for the dinner are
available by calling (800)
655-2586 or online at
www.usdalumni.com/eve
nts.
Alumni Achievement
Award recipients are
recognized for
Professional
Achievement,
Public/Community
Service and Service to the
University. Honored
alumni this year are Joel
Portice of Laguna Niguel,
CA, (B.S. ’87 in Criminal
Justice, member of Sigma
Alpha Epsilon) for
Professional
Achievement; David
Landry of Sioux Falls,
(B.S. ’73 in Biological
Sciences, member of
Lambda Chi Alpha) for
Public/Community
Service; and Daniel Moen
of Pickerel Lake, (B.S.’75
in Business
Administration, and a
M.S.M.A. and J.D./M.B.A.
’78) for Service to the
University.
A native of Sioux Falls,
Portice has had a long
and successful career in
health care technology
since graduating from
USD in 1987. He is
currently serving as
president and CEO of
Verisk Health, a
subsidiary of Verisk
Analytics. Verisk Health
combines clinical
expertise with robust
analytics and advanced
technologies to solve
complex problems for the
health care industry. With
more than 1,700 full-time
employees serving more
than 450 company clients,
Verisk Health is one of
the nation’s top health
care data analytics and
information technology
companies.
Prior to joining Verisk,
Portice was president and
CEO of Intelimedix, a
healthcare data analytics
and software company.
Intelimedix was later
acquired by Blue Health
Intelligence but before
the acquisition, Portice
led the company’s growth
from $1.5 million to more
than $25.3 million in new
sales in just 12 months.
He also co-founded and
was COO of Enclarity, a
health care information
management and
analytics solutions
company.
After eight successful
years of growth as an
independent company,
Enclarity was acquired by
LexisNexis. Before the
launch of Enclarity,
Portice was vice president
of health care and
insurance analytics at Fair
Isaac Corporation. He
also co-founded Integrity
Plus Services, a costcontainment software
company that served the
health care and insurance
markets.
Eventually, because of
its success, Integrity Plus
Services was acquired by
UnitedHealth Group and
became part of
UnitedHealth’s Ingenix
subsidiary.
Landry, a Sturgis,
native who presently
resides in Sioux Falls, was
the co-founder of Honor
Flight South Dakota, an
ongoing national
organization committed
to offering free trips for
World War II Veterans to
visit the recently
completed National
World War II Memorial
in Washington, DC.
Between 2008 and
2012, Landry helped raise
between $1.6 million and
$1.7 million, making it
possible for more than
1,400 World War II
Veterans from South
Dakota to participate in
Honor Flight. He also
helped coordinate trip
logistics and outreach
that provided travel,
medical support, lodging,
meals and hero
recognition for their
service to the United
States.
Landry worked
successfully to develop
the Honor Flight program
from an idea and turned
it into a reality, earning
him the 2011 Governor’s
Award in Philanthropy.
Additionally, Landry’s
efforts were honored by
the South Dakota
Veterans of Foreign Wars,
Disabled American
Veterans and the
American Legion.
Moen, an Irene native,
began his career as a
private practice attorney
in Aberdeen before
becoming associate
general counsel for Super
8 Motels, Inc. He was
then president of ACS,
Inc., a subsidiary of Wells
Fargo Financial Bank
from 1994-2003 and then
continued his career in
business development.
Following his retirement
from ACS, Inc. in 2003,
Moen became involved in
several business
endeavors as an
independent investor.
In 2007, he was named
chairman of the board of
the USD Foundation. He
resigned that position in
2009 to become a Major
Gifts Officer for the USD
School of Law and
Beacom School of
Business. Moen served in
that capacity, obtaining
many substantial gifts for
the university, until 2011
when, following the
resignation of Bryan
Benchoff, he served as
interim president and
CEO of the USD
Foundation – a position
he held until January
2012 when Steve Brown
assumed the position.
