Meet Andy Nelson
By David Lias
david.lias@plaintalk.net
Families planning to
attend the Dakota Days
Parade in Vermillion
often bring an empty
grocery sack or two with
them to store the candy
and other trinkets offered
by floats and other
parade entrants.
Pastor Andy Nelson of
the Luther Center hopes
everyone who attends the
parade, scheduled for
Saturday morning, Oct. 5,
brings non-perishable
food items with them in
their grocery sacks.
The Luther Center, in
partnership with several
other student
organizations on the
University of South
Dakota campus, is
planning a unique parade
entry. With the theme
“Yotes Tackle Hunger,”
the Luther Center’s entry
will consist of a number
of individuals pushing a
fleet of grocery carts
down Main Street, with
the goal of collecting
food items from paradegoers to be donated to the
Vermillion Food Pantry.
The Luther Center’s
entry has received the
blessings of the parade
organizers and the food
pantry, as well as the
support of a number of
local congregations, Andy
said. He will busy in the
next couple weeks
spreading an open
invitation throughout the
community, urging
people to bring food
items to the parade to
help the food pantry.
“There are a couple
student ministries that
are heading this up, but
we’re welcoming the
participation of any
students who would like
to walk in the float, and
most importantly, we’re
asking the community to
respond by making
donations,” Andy said.
Andy shares
information he’s received
from Mary Berglin,
director of the Vermillion
Food Pantry. The Trinity
Lutheran Board of
Deacons began the food
pantry, located in Trinity
Lutheran Church, 30
years ago.
In its first year of
existence, the food pantry
fed 34 people. In 2012,
the pantry fed 4,603
people, and so far in
2013, it has fed 3,800
people.
The busiest month on
record for the Vermillion
Food Pantry was July
2013, when it helped feed
575 people.
Approximately 80
volunteers keep the food
pantry running. Its hours
are Monday, 1 to 5 p.m.;
Tuesday, 5 to 7 p.m.;
Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5
p.m.; Friday, 1 to 5 p.m.
Donations of any indate non-perishable food
items are welcomed.
The start of classes this
fall at USD also marks the
beginning of Andy’s
second year as pastor at
the Luther Center. “This

year; I came in right
around this time last year.
I started in August of
2012.”
Andy grew up in and
attended high school in
Red Wing, MN. He then
attended Luther College
in Decorah, IA, where he
studied political science
and religion, graduating
in 2003.
He received his master
of divinity degree from
Luther Seminary in St.
Paul, MN. While
attending seminary, he
and his wife, Jessica, were
married. She holds a
Ph.D. in child psychology
from the University of
Minnesota, and is
employed as a professor
at Morningside College in
Sioux City, IA, where the
couple makes their home.
Andy said he’s gotten
to know some “incredible
people” in Vermillion and
on the USD campus while
at the Luther Center.
“There’s just an
incredibly dedicated and
faithful group of people
in the community here
that support this
ministry, as well as the
congregations and clergy
around this part of the
state that are supportive
of the work we get to do
with students,” he said.
Much of his work at
the Luther Center
involves simply talking
with people, particularly
students, “whether it’s
informally or formally in
giving them a message in
worship. The highlights
of my work is when
