This is a result of HB 1035 which passed during the 2019 legislative session. The bill makes no changes to the administration of this longstanding program, such as collection of taxes or payment of benefits. “The intent of the name change is to focus efforts on assisting individuals while they find new employment, more accurately reflecting the program’s goal,” said state Labor and Regulation Secretary Marcia Hultman. The UI program provides temporary weekly benefits to people who have lost their job through no fault of their own. Benefits are not meant to replace total wages lost, but to assist with basic necessities. “This support is to assist individuals while they are seeking a new job,” said Secretary Hultman. “This subtle name change reinforces our philosophy of helping people reenter the workforce as quickly as possible.” South Dakota’s UI program is financed by employers through payroll taxes. Workers do not contribute to this plan. The main URL will change to dlr.sd.gov/ra on Friday, June 28. Universities To Offer Graduate Mathematics Certificates BROOKINGS, S.D. – To support K-12 teachers in the teaching of mathematics, South Dakota public universities will offer two nine credithour graduate certificates in math. Target audience is instructors teaching high school students who take a collegelevel math course for both high school and college credit. To ensure that instructors teaching math courses for concurrent or dual credit programs Carpentry, Decks, Windows & Doors, Re?nishing, Drywall, & Ceramic Tile have appropriate credentials, all six public universities in South Dakota will offer the new certificates—one in graduate mathematics and one in advanced graduate mathematics. Regents’ officials said the regional college accrediting body requires dual credit instructors to have a master’s degree and at least 18 graduate-level credits in the subject area being taught. With completion of both nine credit-hour certificates, and a master’s degree in a subject other than mathematics, instructors will hold the needed credentials to teach college-level math to high school students. The graduate certificates, which will also be available for delivery online, are to be offered starting this fall through Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, Northern State University, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, South Dakota State University, and the University of South Dakota.
