6 Broadcaster Press Local Organizations Unite To Create ‘Clean Room’ For Feeding South Dakota A unique partnership between Feeding South Dakota, The Wellmark Foundation, Wells Fargo, and Midwest Dairy has formed to fund and create a brand new “clean room” in Feeding South Dakota’s Distribution Center located in Sioux Falls. This clean room is dedicated to repackaging bulk food items and has been designed to meet the highest standards of sanitation. Wellmark and Wells Fargo generously provided a grant to Feeding South Dakota to build the new clean room at the distribution center. “Creating access to a basic need like nutritious food is a strategic priority for Wells Fargo in South Dakota, so supporting the construction and ongoing use of the clean room was an ideal fit,” said Lesa Jarding, community relations senior consultant for Wells Fargo. “Our team members also enjoy volunteering here—they sort food, stock pantry shelves, and pack student backpacks and senior boxes—so the clean room will offer them a brand-new volunteer experience.” “The Wellmark Foundation is so grateful to Feeding South Dakota for their work to address food insecurity. Healthy food options are critical for all citizens – and especially for children who need solid nutrition to learn, grow, and have a healthy life” said Becky Wampler Bland, Executive Director of The Wellmark Foundation. “We are more than delighted to support the Clean Room which will positively impact the lives of many South Dakotans.” The first bulk product that the organization will repackage is cheese, generously donated by Valley Queen Cheese in Milbank, South Dakota. Valley Queen Cheese has been a donor for nearly 10 years, providing over 10,000 pounds of cheese annually in the form of 40-pound blocks. The clean room will allow Feeding South Dakota the ability to slice and repackage this cheese into usable, family-sized portions. South Dakota dairy farmers and Midwest Dairy have provided funding for the equipment needed to slice and package the cheese which will save Feeding South Dakota thousands of dollars annually. In addition, Midwest Dairy has provided funding to support refrigeration which will help store the cheese at local agency partners throughout the state. “Midwest Dairy is committed to working with food bank partners across our tenstate region to help bring nutrientrich dairy foods to our friends and Find the right job for you! Dairy foods are one of the most requested and least donated products in the food bank system. We and our farmers are excited to be a partner in this initiative to help make a difference for families across South Dakota,” says Whitney Blindert, Registered Dietitian, Midwest Dairy. Feeding South Dakota now joins other food banks in the Feeding America network that are operating clean rooms across the country in an effort to turn donated bulk food into consumer-friendly sizes. Beans, pasta, cereal and rice are all examples of other items that are available through the network to repackage. Feeding South Dakota will be working with more corporate partners to purchase additional repack machines which will allow for the procurement of additional bulk product that under normal circumstances the organization would not have been able to distribute. “Feeding South Dakota is so incredibly grateful to The Wellmark Foundation, Wells Fargo and Midwest Dairy for their generous support and commitment to ending hunger in South Dakota,” says Jennifer Stensaas, Communications Coordinator, Feeding South Dakota. The bachelor of science in neuroscience degree will prepare USD students for professional pathways to graduate study and new careers in a growing field. Meeting this week in Brookings, the Board of Regents agreed to USD’s request to offer the B.S. degree in neuroscience, with specializations available in cognitive neuroscience or molecular and cellular neuroscience. It is estimated that, after full implementation, 10 students a year will graduate with the new degree. Students majoring in neuroscience may pursue graduate studies in behavior neuroscience, clinical neuroscience, biomedical science, or clinical neuropsychology. The degree could also lead to professional study in medicine, physical therapy, or law, and careers in science writing, communication, and the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries. The new minor proposed in conjunction with the neuroscience major will provide essential background for students majoring in other disciplines at USD, such as biology, medical biology, psychology, chemistry, and health sciences.
