12 Broadcaster Press June 26, 2012 www.broadcasteronline.com Tanager baseball team members receive honors By Parker Knox Sportswriter Vermillion's state Class "B" high school baseball champions placed three men on the 2012 All-State team as announced last week by the state high school baseball association, and five VHS players earned all-Region 1B honors. Two Tanager pitchers – senior Nile Morecraft and junior Collin Bertram – and one position player, junior catcher Chayse Meierkort, were named to the All-State squad. Morecraft had a 4-0 record during the season, throwing 24 innings, striking out 17 and allowing 17 hits and 11 walks. He posted an earned-run average of 1.75. Bertram also went 4-0 and also earned two saves for the Tanagers, striking out 43 in 32 innings pitched, and allowing 14 hits and 14 bases on balls. His ERA was 0.66. Meierkort's on-base percentage was .628 in 11 games as he batted .529, hitting safely 18 times in 34 at-bats. Morecraft, Bertram and Meierkort also earned allRegion 1B recognition. They were joined by a pair of Tanager infielders, secondbaseman Stormy Mirtz, a senior, and junior third- baseman Tanner Anderson. Mirtz claimed a .400 batting average on 14 hits in 35 plate appearances in 12 games. He had two doubles and drove in seven runs. His on-base percentage was .512. Anderson drove in nine runs, stole eight bases and had an on-base percentage of .372. He had 15 hits in 34 at-bats for a .357 average in 12 games. He had a double and a triple among his hits.
